Winchester Mount Vernon House is an extraordinary testament to the character of the citizens of Winchester.
In 1894, a large group of Winchester residents founded "a home for aged people." The effort was made possible by a $2,000 bequest from Philip Waldmyer, a prominent Winchester resident and businessman who wanted to make a lasting and positive impact on the community. A town committee was formed and decided to buy a property (Lunt House), then corporators were chosen, and contributions were solicited. The original house was completely furnished with gifts from "169 persons and societies" in the community.
Originally named "The Home for Aged People in Winchester" in 1894, the home housed just four people. Now, over 100 years later, our name and capacity have changed: the house was renamed "The Winchester Mount Vernon House" in April of 1985 and we now offer 17 residential apartments.
More recently, as we moved on from the term "rest home," our board made the official conversion to a licensed assisted living home in 2006. Although many of our residents function independently when they move in, we offer complete assisted living capabilities to all residents should they need them.
Winchester Mount Vernon House continues to fulfill its mission, which has been, since the beginning, to furnish aid, comfort, and a home for aged people in Winchester in a non-institutional setting.
